” Top Tips for your Headshot Session in 2020″

One of the first things that people say to me when they walk through my door is that they hate their photo being taken.
So I thought I’d compile a few tips to help you feel super confident even before you step in front of the camera.

Tip 1:
The Science of Sleep
Sleep is all about restoration and we all know that a bad night’s sleep can show on our face.
Your body increases blood flow to the skin when you sleep, which means a lovely healthy glow when you wake.
So if you’re investing in a headshot, why not make sure you get in a few early nights to get the most out of your investment.

Tip 2:
Pressing Needs
I know this sounds like an obvious one but you’d be surprised how many people forget to iron or steam the outfits they’ve chosen to wear
for their session.  Your photographer will thank you too (no extra retouching to do).
I’ve also found that wearing freshly ironed clothes can give you a boost of self confidence and can make you feel more positive about yourself
which can result in a more relaxed “You” in front of the camera.

Tip 3
What should I Wear?
That’s another question I get asked a lot.  The advice that I have seen work is to keep things really simple.  If you’re in the corporate arena I recommend a well fitting blouse/ shirt in a plain colour.
You want the person looking at the headshot to notice the person in the shirt not to be distracted by any pattern on it.  I’d also team it with a jacket in dark blue, chocolate brown or dark grey rather
the usual black.  Black can be draining on those of us with paler skin tones but can work really well for others that have a warm skin tone (Like my sister… soooo annoying 🙂

Tip 4:
A Bit of Positivity
Whether we like it or not for most of us, how we feel, shows on our face and if we’re feeling a bit negative about ourselves.  Normally caused by that little voice that points out our flaws, which can get the better of us, can result in a more negative mindset going into your session.  I’ve found that a bit of mindfulness the night before your session can go along way to calm the nerves and to remember that you’re taking positive action to improve your profile and to give yourself credit for that can help to wake up in a more positive frame of mind.
